2021 Update on Where I Am On My Journey To Find My One True Calling.

Maybe, just maybe, time will tell.

March 2016, I wrote a list on a post-it note. And it started my journey to my fascination with visualization and vision boards.

My journey to rediscover myself started in 2015, but my journey to figure out my true calling and vocation started on March 7th, 2016!

It started with me wanting to become an architect in 2015 – see my screenshot post below.

I’ve had various conversations with a lot of people on aligning my day job to my vocation and my calling in life.

If you look like you’re having fun at what you do – I may ask you a question. It’s the one question I always find myself asking others about, no matter where or how I’ve met you. ” Have you always know you wanted to be XYZ?”

Some things I have done to help me narrow down what I’m supposed to be …

  1. Various profile/ vocational/ personality test
  2. Read vocational books.
  3. Watched Educational YouTube Videos.
  4. Taken tests to highlight my strengths and weaknesses.

Other things I have done or am still exploring:
I have contemplated taking my CPA exam (because life happens and sometimes you put things on hold) so that I can be a professional in what I do. I even wrote this on my office board pre-Covid-19. CPA 2023!
As a person who loves analysis,  I’ve bought books, researched certifications, googled because I want to:

Get my series license, bought more books for the examination – the goal is to sell insurance, trade stocks like my dad, and explore becoming a minor VC’ if that’s even a thing.

Social Worker, I’ve always pretty much worked with and supported social workers and worked in Human Services since 2000, so it makes sense that social work should be the answer.

I was encouraged to move from bathroom church worker at RCCG Bowie years ago to children’s church worker, I’ve also pretty much worked in the education field since that day. So, thanks Lady E.

A few months ago though, I remembered out of nowhere that I had wanted to be a newscaster as a kid. And I think I even went on some airport field trip with our school when I was little and that’s really interesting  – since I now host a podcast.

The reality is questions like ” how did you find your calling etc” is why I started my Podcast “Loving the Work You Do”.
Why do some people land in their dream career from day one and some don’t?

I’ve found that been mislabeled (called shy or introverted, aggressive, bully, lazy) or even possible traumas can steal your dreams from you at a young age. Little things that happen when we are young have a way of stealing our dreams and hope from us at a young age.

These life events can make us forget what we dreamed of being or aspired for at a young age.

I realized that in the middle of battling life events, the reality is we’re in survival mode, and when in survival mode, it’s really going to be difficult to dream.

This statement was an idea, insight, and a thought process that I had in my mind. And became crystallized when I heard it was supported by research done by Abraham Harold Maslow an American psychologist in his hierarchy of needs research. A theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization.

I think the biggest obstacle to my finding my one calling or anyone else finding their calling may not be the search to find it, but rather how does one pivot without this affecting their family’s life and lively hood and that has been the reason I’ve kept searching. To make sure when I do go head-on into a career change it’s as cost effective as can be.

Time will tell, but while I keep plowing on and I’ll enjoy the journey along the way.

My journey of self-discovery you ask – well it is going great, just in case you wondered. I have had so much adventure on the way.

So, that’s my quick update on where I am on my journey to find my one true calling.

2021, I know for sure it’s not to be an architect. Is it to get my CPA license, or is it to become a Social Worker, or am I a born educator and it’s to be an educator, am I a life coach, or is it to keep loving my day job and helping out every little way I can.
